LVRR Summer Series 5k – Take 1

8 May

Okay, so I raced a local 5k last night. I guess I should put together some thoughts about it. The 5k is one of the Lehigh Valley Roadrunners summer series, the first Wednesday of every month from May to August. I figured I’d give it a try and see what happens this summer. They’re the only races I’m going to run in the next 3 months.

My first thought: That was hard! Do I really want to do three more of these?

My second thought: Yea, I’ll run them all. I did a lot of things wrong last night that I’d like to do right next time.

At the start of the race I ran into someone from high school (god! was that already 21 yrs ago??) I actually bumped into him the weekend before at the LVRR Kids’ Summer Series as we both entered our little ones in the race. We caught up briefly and said we’d see each other at the Summer Series 5k’s. So, we chatted before the race, walked to the starting line.

I lined up in the front. I knew I should probably stand more in back but there weren’t many of us and I figured it wouldn’t be a big deal. As it turns out, it was. I got pulled by all of those front runners into a pace which was entirely too fast for me. At 1/4 mile I looked at my watch and realized I had been running around 6:20. Holy shit!! And at that point ahead of my lay two hills to run over. First mistake! Remember to start a little slower than 6:20.

I slowed down, my Garmin read around 7:30 for the next mile. Okay, I can do that. I ran by the bridge at mile 1.6 which takes you back to the start/finish line and I thought to myself “maybe I’ll just bag this run and not finish”. Yea, right. It’s only 3 miles, right? Watch still registers 7:38. I’m okay. I can do this. At mile 1.8 I can’t swallow. My throat is dry. I grab a water from the volunteers and keep going.

Here comes another hill at mile 1.9. This is not an easy 5k! But I ran my second mile in the high 7’s so I’m happy. Only one more mile. I can do that. Down the hill and across the bridge. Now I’m in the home stretch. 6/10ths of a mile to go. I am so tired! My legs don’t want to run. I don’t dare look at my Garmin and disappoint myself. I’m running in the low 8’s now, between 7:50-8:20. I cannot wait for this race to be over.

My plan next time is to keep more even splits. This time I started fast and slowed down.

Final Time: 24:55

Split Times:

Mile 1 – 7:32
Mile 2 – 7:55
Mile 3 – 8:14
Mile 3.15 – 1:11

Placement Stats:
Overall: 59/119 (49.5%)
Gender: 13/53 (24.5%)
Age Group: 5/20 (25%)
