LVRR Summer Series 5k – Take 2

5 Jun

I wasn’t sure if I was going to go to my 5k last night due to weather but an hour beforehand it was pretty decent out so I headed over to the park to pick up my bib and jog before the race started. As I picked up my bib inside the RoadRunner clubhouse I ran into loopy from and we chatted for a bit before he headed off for his warmup. I had already run mine as I parked on the other side of the park and jogged to the race.

I lined up towards the back of the pack, I wasn’t going to make the same mistake I had made last month by lining up with all of the fast folks. My plan was to run three 8 minute miles. I stuck pretty close to that with an 8:01 average pace for the race. The first mile went okay. There were a couple of girls who didn’t seem to want me to pass them and they kept trying to stay in front of me. Not working my friends. I quickly left them in the dust as we approached the covered bridge. First mile done in 7:56. This is the point where my rival for the rest of the race showed up, heavy breathing and all. I kept a nice steady pace and she would push ahead and then fall back. This was our pattern for the next two miles and the breathing drove me absolutely crazy! Second mile done in 8:01. Still pretty happy about how I’m feeling and running.

The final 1.1 mile was the toughest. Right off the bat you run up a hill, 30 foot incline over a quarter mile. That doesn’t sound too hard until you are there towards the end of a 5k race. Then it’s hard. My pace dropped from an 8:05 to 8:24. This was the exact location and part of the race that lost me a PR. So this is where I need to improve, this exact location during some of my runs in the next month. Anyway, I’m finally at the end of the race kicking it in at 7:35 pace. My heavily breathing rival and I pass the finish line together, she was less than a half a second in front of me. I really should have kicked it in harder but I thought if I did so I would literally fall over and puke.

Final Time: 25:09
Split Times [Paces]:
1.0 — 7:56 [7:56]
2.0 — 8:01 [8:01]
3.0 — 8:09 [8:10]
3.14 — 1:01 [7:35]

Placement Stats:
Overall: 80/132 (60.6%)
Gender: 18/51 (35.3%)
Age Group: 8/22 (36.4%)

Congrats on a near PR and a tough race. Next time, go for the puke! 🙂

Nice job Jill! It sounds like that hill was in the worst possible spot. You’ll get that PR next time.

I was wondering if you did this race or not. Nice job! Your splits were pretty even in spite of that one section!
