Back in the game, at last

16 Feb

Yes, it’s been ages since I’ve posted anything about my running. Mostly because I just haven’t felt like it. A few different things have been standing in the way of blogging about my running. First, I haven’t been doing much running in the last couple of weeks and have been full of worry and depression. I finally started building a little base and once I hit a 20 mile week I began having leg issues. First it felt like tendinitis, then shin splints, but also I had exaggerated ITB aching and then pain on the inside of my knee as well. All in the right leg. Next it was my right ankle. What the hell!!?? These shoes only have 100 miles on them. This should not be happening.

I’ve been running in the Puma Magnetist since last summer. Now, over the summer I was alternating the Puma’s with Saucony Guides. Since my return to running this winter I’ve been using only the Puma’s and the problems began. You see, last summer the Saucony’s were hiding the fact that the Puma’s weren’t working for me. But when running on only the Puma’s the problems came out. There is no arch support in the Puma’s which would make my foot torque the wrong way when I am running, ultimately causing all sorts of problems. The Saucony’s carry the support the entire length of the shoe.

I was a complete mess on Saturday, new shoes on my feet, standing on the treadmill, scared to start up the machine. Were these new shoes really going to solve my problems? Or was I going to hurt myself even more. I punched in 1 mile on the panel and started my run. As I neared the 1 mile mark I pushed the button to add more time and run another mile. I finished my run and was elated. No pain. Nothing hurt. It WAS the shoes!!! On the way home from the gym I called my running partner. I had talked to her the day before and told her I was afraid my spring running was shot, but now I had good news. Everything felt great.

This morning I woke up at dawn for my first early morning run in 2009. Three miles in and around the neighborhood. Everything still feels great and I can’t even tell you how amazing it felt to get outside instead of running on the treadmill. I hate treadmills!
